What to Expect at Your First Dental Appointment in Canada

    July 17, 20265 min read

Walking into a new dentist's office for the first time is one of those things that's much less stressful once you know what's actually going to happen. Here's a realistic walkthrough of a typical new-patient visit.

    Before you go

    • Bring photo ID and your insurance card (or CDCP details) if you have either.
    • Bring a list of any medications you're currently taking - your dentist will ask.
    • Arrive a little early for any new-patient paperwork, if it wasn't done online in advance.
    • Note down any specific concerns - a sensitive tooth, jaw pain, anything you've been putting off asking about.

What actually happens during the visit

    1. A conversation first

Most first visits start with the dentist or hygienist asking about your dental history, any concerns, and your comfort level - especially if you mention any anxiety about the visit. This is a good moment to ask questions before anything starts.

    2. The exam

A comprehensive exam typically includes a visual check of your teeth and gums, and often X-rays (especially if it's been a while, or if this is a genuinely new relationship with a clinic that has no prior records for you). This is where a dentist identifies anything that needs attention.

    3. Cleaning

If a cleaning is part of the visit, a hygienist will remove plaque and tartar buildup, polish your teeth, and may apply fluoride. This is usually the least eventful part of the visit for most patients.

    4. The follow-up conversation

At the end, expect a plain-language rundown of what was found - cavities, anything to monitor, whether a second visit for treatment is needed - and a chance to ask about cost and insurance or CDCP coverage before anything is scheduled.

    What it usually doesn't include

A first visit is typically an exam and cleaning, not a full treatment plan executed on the spot. If something more involved is found (a cavity that needs filling, for example), that's usually scheduled as a separate visit - which, if you're booking through Toothie, can also be the visit that completes your second-visit reward eligibility.

If you're anxious about the visit

It's worth saying so, out loud, at the start of the appointment. Many clinics are genuinely used to working with anxious patients and will adjust their approach - slower pacing, more explanation, breaks when needed - if they know going in. There's no reason to grit your teeth through it (so to speak).
